MOII Android Phone

Fashion-Forward Design for a Youth Market

OVERVIEW

MOII is an Android smartphone designed to be more than just a tech device—it’s a stylish accessory for young users. With its bold checker-patterned surface and clean white finish, MOII blends expressive aesthetics with functional clarity, redefining how smartphones can reflect personal style.

CONCEPT & INSPIRATION

At a time when smartphones were beginning to saturate the market, our goal was to design something fresh—an affordable yet fashion-conscious device that stood out. Inspired by fashion trends, we applied a checker pattern not just as decoration but as a unifying design language that informed the phone’s texture, surface layout, and even iconography.

This pattern wasn’t just aesthetic—it hid the speaker and camera, creating a sense of discovery and cohesion across the device.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

The main design challenge lay in balancing bold visuals with usability. The checker pattern had to serve both form and function—ensuring the surface felt intentional, not chaotic. We paid special attention to the back cover, crafting a texture that felt tactile yet refined.

On the front, we replaced traditional physical buttons with concealed touch-sensitive areas to maintain a minimalist look. Icons and UI details were also customized to echo the checker theme, tying the hardware and software together visually.

2009

As an industrial designer at Pegatron, I co-led the design alongside Nicolas Gonzalez Garrido. I contributed to concept development, visual research, and the final CMF design. I focused on translating a fashion-inspired idea into a production-ready device, carefully balancing bold styling with user-friendliness and manufacturability. I also worked closely with the engineering team to ensure that design details aligned with technical feasibility.

MOII was released to market in 2009 and received the Golden Pin Design Award 2010, recognized for its fresh aesthetic approach and thoughtful integration of style and function.
