ConVida Surgical Light

Guiding Light, In One Seamless Touch

OVERVIEW

ConVida LED Surgical Light was designed to deliver clarity, control, and elegance in a single, unified system. It redefines how medical professionals interact with surgical lighting—eliminating unnecessary components and creating a more intuitive and harmonious experience in the operating room.

CONCEPT & APPROACH

Most surgical lights on the market rely on separate control units located away from the light source. This disconnection not only interrupts workflow but also adds complexity to manufacturing.

We challenged this norm by integrating the control interface directly into the hinge of the lamp—returning control to its most natural and accessible position. This approach restored a sense of unity between interaction and illumination.

DESIGN EXECUTION

To support seamless operation, the control interface was designed concentrically to echo the hinge geometry, allowing intuitive adjustments while preserving visual harmony.

Through rapid paper prototyping, I refined interface layout, iconography, and visual feedback, ensuring smooth operation even under stressful surgical conditions.

Scenario-based walkthroughs with medical professionals validated the improved ergonomics and accessibility. The smooth, joint-minimized form also supports hygiene by making the lamp easy to clean and reducing potential contamination points.

— YEAR

2012

As the lead industrial designer, I redefined the product’s form and interaction model—proposing the idea of embedding the control panel within the hinge to eliminate unnecessary components.

I also led the redesign of the control interface, balancing clarity and usability. Using low-fidelity prototyping and contextual walkthroughs, I ensured that the lamp could be operated intuitively and confidently by surgeons during critical moments.
